What to Expect After Enrolling

Once you’ve enrolled with Just Literacy, we’ll be in touch to arrange a time for you and your child to meet one of our experienced English Tutors. During this session, your child will complete a phonological and phonemic awareness assessment.

This data helps us create a tailored, structured lesson plan designed specifically for your child’s needs. Our lessons are multi-sensory—incorporating visual, auditory, and tactile activities to support lasting learning.

Lesson Structure

  • ⏱️ Each lesson is 45 minutes

  • 🔁 Follows a consistent weekly routine to support confidence and predictability

  • 👨‍👩‍👧 Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend

  • 📝 A small amount of homework is provided to reinforce learning

1:1 Online Lessons

Our Google Meet sessions follow the same structure as in-person lessons and are ideal for families outside the Nelson region. These interactive sessions include digital games and activities that align with the sounds being taught—keeping learners engaged while progressing their skills.

Evidence based approach

Our Approach

We teach using a structured, evidence-based method aligned with the Science of Reading. This approach is especially effective for learners with dyslexia and focuses on explicit, cumulative instruction in key literacy skills.

Key Concepts

  • Letters represent sounds (phonemes).

  • A sound can be spelled with 1–4 letters.

  • One sound may have multiple spellings.

  • One spelling may represent different sounds.

Core Skills We Teach

  • Blending: Joining sounds to read words
    e.g. /m/ /a/ /t/ → mat

  • Segmenting: Breaking words into sounds
    e.g. dig → /d/ /i/ /g/

  • Phoneme Manipulation: Changing, adding, or removing sounds to test alternative spellings
e.g. /o/ as in “hot”, /oe/ as in “no”, /u/ as in “son”
