We teach using an evidence-based approach that aligns with the Science of Reading research. Specific Literacy skills and strategies are taught using a structured, systematic and cumulative approach. This is crucial for people requiring Dyslexia support.
The key concepts are:
1) Letters are symbols (spellings) that represent sounds.
2) A sound may be spelled by 1, 2, 3, or 4 letters.
3) The same sound can be spelled in more than one way.
4) Many spellings can represent more than one sound.
The three key skills are:
1) Blending - the ability to push sounds together to build words.
Example: /m/ /a/ /t/ mat
2) Segmenting - the ability to pull apart the individual sounds in words.
Example: dig /d/ /i/ /g/
3) Phoneme manipulation - the ability to insert sounds into and delete sounds out of words. (This skill is necessary to test out alternative spellings that represent more than one sound).
Example: /o/ as in hot, /oe/ as in no, /u/ as in son
After enrolling with Just Literacy, you will be contacted to arrange a suitable time for you and your child to meet one of our English Tutors. At this meeting, your child will be able to complete the phonological and phonemic awareness assessment.
This assessment data will then be analysed and used to create a tailored lesson plan for the learner. Our Tutors carefully plan specific, structured and individualised lessons that are multi-sensory. This learning involves visual, auditory and tactile activities to enhance learning.
Each lesson is 45mins and follows a similar routine each week. This ensures that the learner knows the predictable routine and expectations. Parents are welcome and encouraged to sit in on the lessons.
Following the lesson, a small amount of homework will be given to the child, to reinforce the learning that has taken place.
1:1 Online lessons
The Zoom lessons follow the same structure as in-person lessons. These lessons are very interactive and include many digital games that are directly related to the sounds that are being taught. The Zoom lessons are perfect for learners who live outside of the Nelson area.
